Royal Photographic Society
The Royal Photographic Society was formed as The Photographic Society in 1853 with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as patrons. It was granted the use of the title 'Royal' by decree in 1894 and was presented the Royal Charter in 2004. The Society's mission today, as in 1853, is 'to promote the Art and Science of Photography'. Membership is open to everyone with a real interest in photography, including newcomers to photography, teachers, historians and scientists, as well as dedicated amateurs and full-time professionals. The Society runs the highly acclaimed Octagon Galleries in the heart of historic Bath, England which house four changing exhibitions of photography and a museum of the history of photography drawn from the Society's internationally important Collection.
